I have read many biographies of both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston S. Churchill over the years. Nearly all of them include information about how these two extraordinary leaders worked together during World War II, but, until recently, I have found no book that takes on the singular challenge of exploring the Churchill-Roosevelt personal relationship in depth – that is, until I discovered “Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship” by Jon Meacham.First published in 2003, “Franklin and Winston” is the second book written by former “Newsweek” editor Jon Meacham. In it, Meacham examines closely the relationship that sprang up between U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) and British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill. They had first met in 1918, during a visit by Roosevelt to Britain. (At that time, both men held minor posts in their respective governments.) Churchill claims to have vividly remembered the meeting and liking FDR very much; Roosevelt only remembered that his first impression of Churchill was not a very positive one.Using a wide variety of sources, including letters and telegrams between Churchill and Roosevelt, as well as letters, diaries, and interviews with those closest to the two leaders, Meacham paints a vivid portrait of a friendship that was largely initiated by Churchill. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill were the two heavyweights who assured that peace would reign throughout the world. Their uneasy alliance with Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin is masterfully told by author Meacham with anecdotes involving their conferences at Tehran and Yalta. At Tehran Stalin felt he should have more influence due to Russia having paid the greatest price in causalities.The human side of all three of these leaders comes out as well. Churchill wanted Roosevelt to assist England against Adolph Hitler's German air attack in the 1940 Battle of Britain but Roosevelt wisely begged off due to the United States not being prepared to join in the fight. It was only after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, America was brought into war with Japan. Then, to Churchill's delight Germany declared war on America so now Churchill was to get the support he longed for. In the meantime Hitler was biting off more than he could chew by attacking Russia as well as declaring war on America.Many conferences between Roosevelt and Churchill took place in addition to others with the wily Stalin. The war weary Roosevelt had lost weight and appeared ill by the time the three leaders met at Yalta in 1944. Roosevelt was elected to a fourth term of office in November of 1944 but passed away on April 12, 1945. There was thoughts he might have retired from office prior to his passing.I am a general reader of American history and found this book to be interesting to follow and read the 370 pages in approximately six sessions. On page 328 I came across a quote by Anthony Trollope that jumped off the page due to its relevance today. "A blind giant--a creature who has lost great strength but is doomed to remember what it was like to wield power even in his weakened state--is the essential tragic figure." I don't feel a need to translate this to today.
